Recommendations for study on the Atonement

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

In preparation for Easter I am presenting a series of sermons dealing with Christ’s death for sinners. Several resources are proving to be very helpful. I thought I would pass along a few recommendations.

The Atonement: Its Meaning & Significance by Leon Morris is excellent and well within the grasp of anyone interested in this vital Biblical theme.

In My Place Condemned He Stood: Celebrating the Glory of the Atonement by Packer and Dever is more challenging but not highly technical.

The Apostles Doctrine of the Atonement by George Smeaton is a must for serious study. Smeaton deals with all texts in the Epistles that bear on an understanding of the atonement. Excellent but challenging.

These books can be purchased from the following bookstores at great prices.

Westminster Bookstore and Monergism Books.

The Jesus Storybook Bible

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

JSBB

There is an enormous amount shallow and moralistic material on the market for children. How refreshing to now of this outstanding resource. The Jesus Storybook Bible Deluxe edition is a must if you have young children or grandchildren. Why? These stories teach children that God is the hero of the Bible and that each story unfailingly points to Christ as King and Redeemer. The deluxe edition features the outstanding storytelling talents of British actor David Suchet (yes, you Poirot fans heard me correctly – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Suchet).

Church “growth” or mere “expansion”?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Check this out to read an excellent example of what happens when church expansion (numbers) replaces church growth (edification of the saints that the saints may do the work of the ministry).

Do We Have Free Will?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Andy Naselli (PhD – BJU; working on 2nd PhD at Trinity) has written a very helpful article on “free will”. It is practically impossible to overstate the importance of the question for understanding the Christian faith. Read is carefully over several days with Bible in hand. Andy is a good scholar and passionate Christian servant of Christ.
