Finding a true friend

My name is Susie and I’m a retired hospital doctor. Until 2016 I had always believed in

God but stubbornly refused to accept Jesus into my life.  That would have meant

lifestyle changes I didn’t want to make: much too inconvenient.

After retiring in 2014, I unexpectedly became ill with Type 1 diabetes and other medical conditions.  These were very time-consuming to manage and made me feel depressed and frustrated.

My entire life was to change, much to my surprise, when I met Neelima (a church member at Grace Baptist Church) in Halifax town centre in September 2016. Through a combination of discussions with her, attendance at Grace Baptist Church and a ‘Christianity Explored’ course, I finally accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I fully and finally appreciated that He had died for our sins although we do not deserve it, and that, as a repentant believer, eternal life with Him is now assured.

The joy resulting from being ‘born again’ is immense.  Life remains challenging as regards family problems (including my mother who has dementia and a recent hip fracture), ongoing physical health issues, a tendency to worry excessively and so on, but I have found that Jesus is my true friend and He always responds and helps when I turn to Him in prayer.

The reassurance that I will be with Jesus for eternity is so precious and heartening.  It gives me the strength to deal with the trials of daily life whilst not losing sight of the many blessings He has bestowed upon us (which we often forget or take for granted). I have found His words to be true:

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’
